Opening Moves Brrr,
look at that start! This ought to
be interesting. I haven’t played a Highlands map before, so I wonder if
the peaks blocking chokepoints will be common or if this is just a teaser.
Tenochtitlan has already been
founded, so no decision there. Since
I already have hunting to build camps, and there’s nothing in sight that can
be farmed, I decide I can postpone the early worker techs and make a run at an
early religion, and start research on Meditation.
I build another scout and a warrior while I grow to size two, then build
my first worker. (I’ve since decided that early workers are probably better, but I’m
still learning!). My first
scout pops Animal Husbandry from a
hut in 3760BC, and then I do in fact win the Buddhism
race with Meditation in 3640.
Being still unwise in the ways of religion
Scouts
are fairly successful, bringing in 121g from two huts in addition to the tech,
and holding off a couple of animals. I
meet Julius Caesar in 3440 to the SW.
My next research goal is the Wheel
in 3280 so I can start connecting these camps, then Fishing
in 3040. Tenoch will grow slowly,
but should be a good commerce generator with all the lake tiles. One of the scouts is finally eaten by a bear in 3000BC.
Here’s my empire at that point. With
the peak blocking access to Tenoch from the east, I had my ‘garrison’
warrior forward deployed, so he could intercept incoming further out, and give
me time to build another if he failed.
Hinduism
is FIDL in 2840, and then I discover Masonry
in 2640, swapping then to pottery. Caesar
adopts Slavery in 2320, so he has Bronze Working, while I’m still wandering
around the tech tree with no real objective.
(This would be a recurring theme
for the first few ages). 1880BC I
discover Writing, and Judaism is FIDL.
I have also finally gotten my first settler out, and Teotihuacan
is founded in 1840.
I’m
building a granary in Tenotch to let it grow for a while, and started on Sailing
for the lighthouses (wandering again, I
forgot about Alphabet).
Buddhism spreads to Teot quickly, which is good.
A number of turns pass while Stonehenge and Oracle are built in far-away
lands, and I finally meet Mansa Musa. Only
2 cities at 1000BC, this doesn’t sound good!
I guess I was still looking for a ‘great’ spot to settle, you can see
I’m building a galley to finally begin to look to the east.
Alphabet is discovered in 875BC, but no one will trade with me (Not a monopoly, Caeser has it too). I’ve also met Mao ZeDong in 925BC. Go for BW next (4 turns), so I, too, can adopt slavery! My exploring galley pays off as I find some fertile grassland to my SE, and I get my 3rd city, Tlatelolco on that segment of the continent in 550BC, the same turn I discover Literature. My capital begins on the Great Library, I haven’t built it yet, but since Tenotch seems like a good research city, it should be a good fit. Lots of GP’s being born in far away lands, I haven’t run any specialists yet so none for me! I do get Currency in 175BC, then 3 turns later, I complete the Great Library
. As you
can see, Wonder Movies don’t work well on my video card! By 275 I
had met Saladin and Alexander, and
75BC Saladin adopts Theocracy and Christianity. Victoria is the
last Civ I meet, but she jumps to the top of the chart. In fact in 0AD, she adopts Representation, so I’m guessing
she’s got the Pyramids (or she’s WAY ahead in tech!!). I founded my 4th city, Texcoco, also to the SE to grab a source of Iron.
(This would later become one of my best cities!) Here’s my empire in 25AD:
Although
the score isn’t showing on that map, trust me it wasn’t good!
Now, how to dig out of this hole? |
